Essential Supplies Every New Cat Owner Needs

Essential Supplies Every New Cat Owner Needs

Bringing a new cat home is exciting. Having the basics ready before they arrive helps them settle in faster and makes the first few days calmer for everyone. Here is a practical checklist.

Food and water

  • The same food they are used to. Ask the breeder or rescue what your cat has been eating, and change gradually later if needed.
  • Shallow bowls — many cats prefer wide, shallow dishes. Place water away from the food bowl.
  • A water fountain (optional) — some cats drink more from moving water.

Litter essentials

  • A litter tray large enough for your cat to turn around in comfortably.
  • Litter — if possible, start with the type your cat already knows.
  • A scoop and a routine: scoop daily and fully refresh the tray regularly.

A good rule of thumb for multi-cat homes is one tray per cat, plus one extra, placed in quiet spots.

Rest and hiding places

Cats feel safer when they have somewhere cosy to retreat. A soft bed, a blanket in a quiet corner, or even a cardboard box gives a new cat a place to observe from while they get used to their surroundings.

Scratching and play

Scratching is natural and helps cats stretch and maintain their claws. A sturdy scratching post placed near where they rest will help protect your furniture. Add a few toys — a feather wand for interactive play and some small toys to bat around.

Travel and care

  • A secure carrier for the journey home and vet visits.
  • A brush or comb suited to their coat length.
  • A breakaway collar and ID tag if your cat will go outdoors — and ask your vet about microchipping.

Book a vet check. Arrange a visit soon after your cat arrives to discuss vaccinations, parasite prevention, neutering and microchipping.
