Choosing Safe Toys for Your Pet

Choosing Safe Toys for Your Pet

Toys are essential for exercise, mental stimulation and bonding — but not every toy suits every pet. A little thought before you buy goes a long way towards safe, enjoyable play.

Choose the right size

A toy should be too large to swallow or get lodged in the throat. Balls in particular should be bigger than your pet’s mouth can fully close around. When in doubt, size up.

Match the toy to the play style

  • Chewers need durable toys designed for chewing.
  • Fetchers enjoy balls and throw toys made for outdoor use.
  • Tuggers love rope and tug toys — play gently, especially with puppies.
  • Hunters (most cats) love wand toys and small toys they can chase and pounce on.

Check toys regularly

Inspect toys often and replace any that are cracked, torn or coming apart. Loose stuffing, squeakers, strings and small pieces can be a choking or swallowing hazard.

Supervise interactive toys

Wand toys with strings or feathers are wonderful for play sessions but should be put away afterwards. Never leave string, ribbon or elastic where pets can swallow it.

Rotate to keep things interesting

Keep a few toys out and store the rest. Swapping them every week or so makes “old” toys feel new again, and gives you a chance to check their condition.
