A new puppy brings plenty of fun — and plenty of curiosity. Preparing your home before they arrive helps keep them safe and sets you up for good habits from day one.
Puppy-proof your home
- Move cables, shoes and small objects out of reach.
- Store cleaning products, medicines and human food securely.
- Check your garden for gaps in fences and for plants that may be harmful to dogs.
Set up a cosy space
Choose a quiet spot for your puppy’s bed where they can rest undisturbed. A washable bed and a soft blanket make life easier — accidents happen!
The essentials checklist
- Puppy food (start with what they are already eating)
- Food and water bowls
- A comfortable bed and blanket
- A well-fitting collar with an ID tag, plus a lead
- Chew toys suitable for puppies
- Poop bags and an enzyme cleaner for accidents
Start training gently
Short, positive sessions work best. Reward the behaviour you want with praise or a small treat, take your puppy outside frequently for toilet breaks — especially after meals, naps and play — and be patient. Consistency matters more than perfection.
Register with a vet and book a check-up soon after your puppy arrives to discuss vaccinations, worming, flea treatment and microchipping.
